About Cold Chain Shipping

From Pre-Trip Inspection to Destination Data Log.

Atlantic Pacific Lines manages the cold chain from PTI verification at origin through temperature data log delivery at destination. Every checkpoint between those two points is owned by APL, not delegated to the carrier.

  • Pre-Trip Inspection certificate required before any reefer container is accepted for stuffing
  • Reefer plug allocation confirmed in writing at all transshipment ports before sailing is accepted
  • GDP pharmaceutical documentation including carrier qualification and temperature compliance certificates
  • HACCP and FSMA Sanitary Transportation documentation for regulated food product shipments
  • Full temperature data log retrieved at destination for compliance and insurance documentation

Why APL for Cold Chain

Six Controls That Keep Your Cold Chain Intact

Every control below is standard on every reefer booking at Atlantic Pacific Lines, not a premium service tier.

Pre-Trip Inspection Required

A PTI certificate confirming compressor function, probe calibration, and door gasket integrity is required before container acceptance.

Setpoint Confirmed in Writing

Required temperature setpoint is confirmed with the carrier in writing before equipment is released for loading.

Transshipment Plug Allocation

Written plug confirmation at every transshipment hub is secured before sailing is accepted, regardless of routing cost.

GDP Pharmaceutical Documentation

APL prepares the complete GDP package, including carrier qualification, logger placement protocol, and compliance certificate.

HACCP and FSMA Food-Grade

Sanitary Transportation documentation, carrier qualification, and sanitization certification are standard for food cargo.

Full Temperature Data Log

Logger placement inside the cargo is specified, download intervals confirmed, and the full thermal record delivered at the destination.

Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences Cold Chain by Air and Ocean

Atlantic Pacific Lines manages pharmaceutical cold chain under WHO GDP and FDA 21 CFR guidelines by ocean, and through APL's IATA-certified air freight division for time-critical pharmaceutical shipments requiring temperature-controlled ULD management.

Talk to a Specialist
Why does Atlantic Pacific Lines require PTI on every reefer booking? +
Pre-Trip Inspection is the most effective prevention against in-transit temperature excursion claims. Door gasket failures, miscalibrated probes, and compressors that fail under full refrigeration load can all pass a visual check and fail during the voyage. APL requires a carrier-issued PTI certificate confirming compressor function under load before any reefer container is accepted for stuffing.
What temperature ranges can APL manage for ocean reefer shipments? +
Standard ocean reefer containers maintain setpoints from approximately -30 degrees Celsius to +30 degrees Celsius. Atlantic Pacific Lines coordinates frozen cargo, GDP pharmaceutical chilled ranges, and controlled ambient protocols. Carrier capability for specific setpoints on specific trade lanes is confirmed before booking, not assumed.
How does APL handle GDP pharmaceutical cold chain documentation? +
Atlantic Pacific Lines prepares the complete GDP documentation package including carrier qualification letter, temperature setpoint confirmation, data logger placement protocol specifying probe location inside the cargo, continuous monitoring instruction for the carrier, and Certificate of Temperature Compliance for the consignee at destination.
What happens if reefer plug confirmation is not available at a transshipment port? +
Atlantic Pacific Lines does not accept a sailing on a transshipment routing without written reefer plug confirmation at every hub port. If plug allocation is unavailable on the transshipment routing, APL identifies a direct sailing alternative even at higher cost. The cost of a temperature excursion claim far exceeds the freight differential.
Can Atlantic Pacific Lines handle FSMA-regulated food product reefer shipments? +
Yes. APL handles HACCP-certified food product reefer shipments and prepares Sanitary Transportation documentation under FSMA 21 CFR Part 1 Subpart O, including carrier qualification, temperature records, and sanitization certification for the reefer unit. Atlantic Pacific Lines confirms prior-cargo compatibility before accepting any food-grade reefer booking.
Does APL offer LCL reefer consolidation? +
Yes, for select trade lanes and commodity types. LCL reefer is available through CFS facilities with verified reefer plug capability and cold storage. Commodity type, temperature range, and co-loading compatibility are confirmed before booking acceptance.
What is controlled atmosphere shipping and how does it differ from standard reefer? +
Controlled atmosphere (CA) shipping modifies the oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen levels inside a reefer container beyond simple temperature control, extending the shelf life of fresh produce, flowers, and certain fruits by slowing respiration. Standard reefer containers only regulate temperature without altering atmospheric gas composition. CA containers are used for commodities like avocados, berries, and cut flowers where shelf life extension is worth the additional equipment cost. Atlantic Pacific Lines coordinates CA container sourcing and confirms gas setpoint specifications with the carrier before loading, as CA capability is not available on all reefer units in all carrier fleets.
